There are several downloads you need in order to use GNS3, and it isn’t as straight forward as I’d prefer (neither are the other tutorials that I have seen). So, I decided to make a post dedicated to getting your GNS3 environment up and running.
First things first, you need to know the system requirements:

If your system meets the minimum requirements, please continue. You are now ready to begin your downloads. YAY!!
-Now, go to GNS3.com, and let’s get started.
STEP 1: Download the GNS3 software, follow these initial steps
1b. download the GNS3 VM for your system.
Step 2: Download VMWare Workstation and VM VIX. I would suggest opening a second tab for this one. Click here VMware Workstation 12 Download.
2a. download the VMware workstation player, then click on the ‘Drivers & Tools’ tab
2b. download the VIX driver.
Note: there is a download for Linux, *it did not fit in the screenshot.

Step 4: Download the Cisco IOS Appliance images. Image Download

Step 5: Import the GNS3 VM into the VMware Workstation.
Step 6: Import IOS images into GNS3 VM.
